What the result means
The exact open space is the clear distance between adjacent batten edges. Center-to-center spacing adds one full batten width to that gap. The position list measures every mark from the left edge of the entire wall, including any left margin you entered.
Field check: Walls are rarely perfectly square. Measure at the height where the layout matters, verify the final batten position, and dry-mark the complete wall before cutting.
How to use the calculator
- Measure the full wall width and select the same unit used by your tape.
- Enter the actual face width of one batten—not its nominal lumber size.
- Add fixed left or right margins for corners, casing, outlets, or design boundaries.
- Choose whether the outermost battens sit at both usable edges.

The spacing formula
For equal open spacing, first find the usable width by subtracting fixed margins. Then subtract the combined face width of every batten. Divide what remains by the number of open spaces.
spaces = battens − 1
Without edge battens:
spaces = battens + 1
Exact gap:
(usable width − batten count × batten width) ÷ spaces
For the center-to-center method without edge battens, the usable width is divided into one equal center interval per batten. This creates half-sized open gaps at the two outside edges and full open gaps between battens.
Worked example
A 12-foot wall is 144 inches wide. Seven 2½-inch battens placed at both edges use 17½ inches of wall width. The six spaces share the remaining 126½ inches:
(144 − 17.5) ÷ 6 = 21.0833 inches, which displays as 21 1/16 inches when rounded to the nearest sixteenth. Mark each batten from the wall’s left edge using the generated position list.
Common layout mistakes
- Dividing the wall width by the batten count without subtracting batten widths.
- Confusing the visible gap with the center-to-center interval.
- Using nominal lumber size instead of measuring the installed face width.
- Stepping off a rounded gap repeatedly, which accumulates error across the wall.
- Ignoring corners, baseboards, window casing, switches, or visibly uneven walls.
- Ordering exactly the calculated length with no allowance for defects or cutting.
