How far do your deck joists need to span?

Measure the clear distance from the face of one support to the face of the next support. Do not include the joist overhang beyond the beam.

How deck joist span is measured

Joist span is the clear horizontal distance between the face of the ledger or support and the face of the next beam or support. A joist cantilever is the separate portion extending beyond the beam, so it is not added to the clear span.

What joist spacing means

Joist spacing is measured on center. Moving joists closer together can support decking more frequently and often makes a floor feel firmer, but the joist span table and the decking product both limit the layout.

Common deck joist sizes

Solid-sawn residential deck framing commonly uses nominal 2×6, 2×8, 2×10 or 2×12 joists. A deeper joist generally reaches farther, but species, grade, moisture exposure, spacing, loads, bearing and connections all matter.

How lumber species affects allowable span

Species groups have different published design values. Read the grade stamp rather than identifying lumber by color or appearance. This calculator initially supports No. 2 Southern Pine, Douglas Fir-Larch, Hem-Fir, Spruce-Pine-Fir and the Redwood / Western Cedar group.

Why snow load matters

Snow can control a deck design even when the general residential live-load assumption does not. The current normal result is limited to the displayed 40 psf prescriptive criteria. Higher or unknown ground snow loads receive an out-of-scope warning and require an applicable local table or structural design.

Joist span versus cantilever

The backspan is the supported portion of a joist behind the beam. The cantilever is the unsupported projection beyond it. A passing clear span does not automatically make an overhang acceptable, so the calculator reports the cantilever check separately.

Composite and PVC decking spacing

Composite and PVC decking manufacturers publish product-specific maximum joist spacing. Diagonal boards, stairs, heat and concentrated loads can require closer supports. Verify the exact installation instructions even when the framing member passes a prescriptive span table.

When a structural professional is needed

Obtain a site-specific design for hot tubs, pools, roofs, fireplaces, masonry, large kitchens, heavy planters, commercial or multifamily decks, engineered joists, damaged lumber, unusual multi-span framing, unsupported snow loads or other concentrated loads.

Calculation source and limitations

The versioned data sets are transcribed independently from 2018, 2021 and 2024 IRC Table R507.6 for No. 2 wet-service dimension lumber, 40 psf live load, 10 psf dead load and L/360 main-span deflection. When the edition is not known, the calculator clearly identifies 2021 IRC as its designated default. Selecting an edition is a preliminary comparison, not automatic approval by a state, county or city.

Review the measurement disclaimer and verify the applicable code edition, amendments, loads, grade stamp, decking instructions and connections with the local building department or a qualified structural professional.

Frequently asked questions

How is deck joist span measured?

Measure the clear horizontal distance from the face of one support to the face of the next support. Do not include the joist overhang beyond a beam.

What does joist spacing on center mean?

On-center spacing is measured from the centerline of one joist to the centerline of the next. Common deck layouts use 12, 16 or 24 inches on center, subject to the joist and decking limits.

Can this calculator size joists for a hot tub?

No. Hot tubs, pools, masonry features, large kitchens and other concentrated loads need a site-specific structural design.

Why does composite decking need a separate check?

Composite and PVC products have manufacturer-specific support limits. Some require closer joist spacing, especially when installed diagonally or on stairs.
