A picket gap affects privacy, airflow, wind exposure, appearance, and whether an opening is safe or compliant for its intended use. Before choosing a visual spacing, identify whether the fence is ornamental, a general yard enclosure, part of a pool barrier, or serving another regulated purpose.

Start with applicable requirements
Building, zoning, pool-barrier, neighborhood, utility, and property-line requirements can differ. Opening limits may depend on fence height, climbability, gate hardware, distance from grade, or the shape of nearby horizontal members. General internet advice cannot determine approval for a specific property.
Before design: Ask the authority having jurisdiction which current rules apply to the location and fence purpose. Confirm permits, setbacks, easements, and underground utility marking as well as picket spacing.
Balance privacy and airflow
Narrower gaps block more direct sightlines but can increase the wind load transferred to posts and footings. Wider gaps admit more light and air and show more of the background. A spacing calculator can equalize a selected gap, but it cannot determine the structural design appropriate for the site’s wind, soil, height, and materials.
Allow for real material behavior
Wood pickets can shrink, swell, cup, or vary in finished width with species, moisture, treatment, and exposure. Measure representative material and follow supplier guidance. Composite, vinyl, and metal systems may specify exact gaps, brackets, or expansion allowances; those instructions take priority over a generic layout.
Count spaces correctly
If the first and last pickets are flush with the clear opening, the number of spaces is one fewer than the number of pickets. If equal gaps remain at both outside edges, the number of spaces is one greater than the number of pickets.
When starting from a maximum desired gap, round the required picket count upward. Rounding down can make the final equalized gap larger than the intended maximum.
Lay out from one reference edge
- Install or verify plumb posts and measure the actual clear opening.
- Measure the finished picket face width.
- Calculate the count, exact gap, and center positions.
- Mark each position from the same left reference instead of stepping rounded gaps.
- Check the last mark, gate clearances, terrain, and rail joints before fastening.
- Use a spacer block only after confirming it matches the calculated field gap.
Worked example: keeping a selected gap below 4 inches
For a 96-inch clear opening with 3.5-inch pickets flush at both ends, 14 pickets occupy 49 inches. That leaves 47 inches divided among 13 internal gaps, producing an exact gap of about 3.615 inches, or approximately 3 5/8 inches on a tape. Thirteen pickets would leave 12 gaps of about 4.21 inches, which is larger than the selected 4-inch planning limit.
This example demonstrates the count logic only. A user-selected gap does not establish that a fence, guard, or pool barrier complies with the rules for a particular site.
Mock up the material before committing
Measure several pickets from the delivered bundle and mock up a short section using the calculated spacer. Check the view from both sides, the bottom clearance over the actual grade, and the last gap at each post. Wet wood may change dimension as it dries, while manufactured systems may require a specific bracket or expansion allowance.
Plan for sloped ground
A plan-view spacing remains useful on a slope, but vertical appearance depends on whether the fence is stepped or racked. Keep the chosen vertical reference and bottom clearance consistent with the system instructions and local requirements. Do not assume one flat section measurement describes changing terrain.
