Important: Falls from roofs and ladders can cause severe injury or death. If the measurement cannot be obtained safely from plans, the ground, a gable, or an attic, hire a qualified professional with appropriate access and fall-protection equipment.
Check drawings and records first
Construction drawings, truss documentation, previous roofing estimates, inspection records, or manufacturer paperwork may already state the pitch. Confirm that the record applies to the exact roof plane you are evaluating because additions and intersecting roofs may use different slopes.
Measure an accessible gable end
A visible gable can expose the same triangle without stepping onto the roof. Use a level horizontal reference and compare vertical rise to horizontal run. Keep ladders and tools clear of overhead electrical lines and unstable ground.
Use attic framing only when access is suitable
An unfinished attic may allow a level run and vertical rise to be measured against a rafter. Attics introduce their own hazards: weak ceiling surfaces, low headroom, heat, exposed fasteners, wiring, insulation, poor lighting, and confined access. Step only on confirmed structural framing and do not disturb suspect materials.
Understand the 12-inch run method
Hold or establish a truly level 12-inch horizontal run, then measure vertically to the rafter or roof line at the end of that run. A 6-inch vertical difference over 12 inches of horizontal run is a 6-in-12 pitch. Longer reference runs can reduce reading error when space allows.
Do not turn geometry into structural approval
Pitch is only one property of a roof. It does not identify allowable rafter spans, design loads, bracing, connections, sheathing, underlayment, drainage, or approved roof coverings. Those decisions require complete project information and current local requirements.
Before using the result
- Confirm the measurement represents horizontal run, not sloped distance.
- Repeat the measurement and compare it with available plans or records.
- Check whether different roof planes have different pitches.
- Keep overhang, ridge, and framing-cut allowances separate from basic geometry.
- Verify product slope limits and structural requirements with qualified sources.
