Assumptions

  • Wall coordinates start at the bottom-left corner of the entered wall.
  • The hanger mark is centered horizontally and offset down from each frame’s top edge by the entered amount.
  • Horizontal and vertical spacing are clear edge-to-edge gaps between layout cells or frames.
  • Frame dimensions include the complete visible frame, not only the artwork.

What the layout result means

The arrangement size is the smallest rectangle surrounding every frame. Its left and bottom edges locate the complete group on the wall. Each frame row lists its own left edge, bottom edge, center, and hook position measured from the wall’s bottom-left corner.

Hanger check: Hanging wire stretches under load, and D-rings or brackets may not sit at the same height. Measure each frame’s loaded hanging point before using the calculated hook mark.

How to use the calculator

  1. Measure the usable wall width and height.
  2. Add every frame and enter its complete outside width and height.
  3. Reorder frames to control their sequence in the selected layout.
  4. Choose a row, column, symmetrical grid, centered cluster, or stair-step.
  5. Set clear spacing and the arrangement center height.
  6. Measure the hanger offset down from each frame’s top edge.
  7. Add a furniture height to check the clearance below the arrangement.
  8. Print the plan and verify it with paper templates on the actual wall.

How each layout works

  • Horizontal row: Frames run left to right and share one vertical center.
  • Vertical column: Frames run top to bottom and share one horizontal center.
  • Symmetrical grid: Frames are centered in equal cells based on the largest frame, with a centered partial last row.
  • Centered cluster: Rows use actual frame sizes and each row is centered within the widest row.
  • Stair-step: Frames move left to right while each bottom edge rises by the entered vertical amount.

Worked example

Three 16 × 20-inch frames in a horizontal row with 4-inch gaps create a 56 × 20-inch arrangement: 48 inches of frame width plus 8 inches of spacing. Centered 57 inches above the floor on a 120-inch wall, the arrangement begins 32 inches from the left edge and 47 inches above the floor.

With hangers 2 inches below each top edge, all three hook marks are 65 inches above the floor. The horizontal hook marks are the center of each individual frame.

  • Measuring artwork instead of the complete outside frame dimensions.
  • Centering each frame separately rather than treating the group as one composition.
  • Assuming the hanging wire’s unloaded position matches its loaded position.
  • Ignoring furniture, switches, vents, doors, sightlines, or ceiling changes.
  • Using wall anchors without confirming wall material, load, and concealed services.
  • Skipping a full-size paper-template review before drilling.

Frequently asked questions

What height should the center of a gallery wall be?

A commonly used starting point is around eye level, but the right center depends on the room, viewers, furniture, ceiling, and arrangement size. Enter the center height that fits the actual space.

How do I measure a hook position for a picture frame?

Measure from the frame’s top edge down to the loaded hanging point. The calculator subtracts that offset from the frame’s calculated top height and centers the hook horizontally.

Can I use different frame sizes?

Yes. Add frames individually, enter each finished width and height, and reorder them. Grid layouts use consistent cells, while centered clusters use the actual frame dimensions within each row.

How far should art hang above furniture?

There is no universal distance for every room. Enter the furniture height to see the calculated clearance, then judge the composition at full scale before drilling.

Does the preview replace a paper template?

No. The preview helps plan proportions and positions. Taping paper templates to the actual wall remains a valuable final check for scale, sightlines, furniture, and hidden services.
