Measure a real landscape, not one oversized rectangle

Most yards have several beds with different shapes. Add each rectangle, circle, triangle, or known square-foot area separately. Deductions let you remove patios, boulders, large planters, or other spaces that will not receive material.

Refreshing an existing bed? Measure the depth you need to add. Entering the full desired finished depth can overstate the order when material is already in place.

Depth guidance for mulch and stone

University of Minnesota Extension recommends a two- to four-inch organic mulch layer in many landscape settings and cautions against piling it against trunks or stems. Decorative-stone depth depends more directly on stone size: smaller stone may use a shallower layer, while larger stone needs greater depth to cover consistently.

These are planning references, not fixed installation rules. Product instructions, drainage, edging, fabric, plant health, slopes, and the existing surface can change the correct depth for a particular project.

How the order is calculated

  1. Total all included areas and subtract uncovered areas.
  2. Multiply the net area by the material depth to get volume.
  3. Add the selected allowance for settling and measurement variation.
  4. Round bag purchases up to a whole bag.
  5. Round bulk purchases up to the supplier increment you enter.
  6. For rock, confirm the weight conversion with the exact supplier and product.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate mulch for several landscape beds?

Add every bed separately, choose its shape, enter the measurements, and use one shared material depth. The calculator totals the included areas before converting the project to cubic feet, cubic yards, and whole bags.

How deep should mulch be?

University of Minnesota Extension describes two to four inches as a common organic-mulch range. Existing beds may need only enough material to restore the desired depth, and mulch should be kept away from trunks and stems.

How deep should landscape rock be?

Depth depends on stone size and the application. Home Depot guidance uses roughly two inches for small stone, three inches for three-quarter- to one-inch stone, and four inches for larger stone. Confirm the product and supplier recommendation.

Why can rock tonnage differ between suppliers?

Stone type, particle size, moisture, and fines change weight per cubic yard. The calculator keeps cubic-yard volume as the geometry result and uses an editable tons-per-cubic-yard conversion for estimated weight.

Should I buy bags or bulk material?

Compare the whole-bag quantity with the bulk order rounded to your supplier's sales increment. Delivery access, fees, product consistency, storage space, and return policies can matter as much as volume.
