Landscaping projects commonly include several beds with different shapes. Calculate each area, subtract spaces that will remain uncovered, then apply the finished material depth before converting volume into bags, bulk yards, or supplier tonnage.

Break the property into measurable areas

Use rectangles, circles, or other supported shapes for each bed. Approximate curves with several smaller sections when that gives a better field measurement. Name the areas so the printed plan can be checked against the property.

Subtract true deductions

Deduct patios, large boulders, sheds, water features, and other surfaces that will not receive material. Small plants usually do not justify deductions because material still surrounds them.

Avoid overlap: Do not count the same corner or connecting bed in two included shapes.

Use finished depth

Volume depends directly on depth. Measure depth after settling or compaction where relevant and follow the material supplier or landscape specification. Existing material, slopes, fabric, drainage, and plant needs can change the appropriate amount.

Compare bags with bulk delivery

Bag counts use the labeled cubic-foot coverage and round up to whole bags. Bulk material is normally ordered in cubic yards. Compare delivery minimums, access, placement, and cleanup—not only the unit price.

  • Exact bag volume from the label
  • Supplier minimum and delivery charge
  • Where the load can be dumped
  • Wheelbarrow access and labor
  • Allowance for uneven grade and settlement

Use supplier density for rock

Rock tonnage is a weight conversion, and density varies with stone type, gradation, moisture, and voids. Use the supplier’s tons-per-cubic-yard value for the actual product rather than assuming one universal density.

Ordering control: Ask the supplier whether quoted tonnage is based on loose, delivered, or compacted material.
