Why design volume and purchase volume differ
Compacted base volume describes the finished layer: footprint multiplied by compacted depth. Purchase volume adds the allowance you select for compaction, handling, grading, and field loss. Supplier density or bag yield is never silently assumed; enter the current local product value when you need tons, kilograms, or bags.

Drainage and excavation are planning checks
Slope drop equals slope percentage multiplied by the selected run. The plan diagram makes the chosen high and low sides visible. Confirm that water moves to an acceptable discharge point and away from buildings. Excavation adds paver thickness, bedding, base, and finish-height adjustment; actual subgrade correction can change it.

How many pavers do I need for a patio?
Start with the net paved area and current manufacturer coverage for the exact paver and pattern. Round up to purchasable pieces or packages, then add a project-specific waste allowance.
How deep should the base be under patio pavers?
Base depth depends on soil, drainage, climate, loading, and the selected pavement system. Four inches is only an ideal-condition pedestrian planning minimum in this calculator, not a universal design value.
How much bedding sand should go under pavers?
A nominal 1-inch final bedding course is common for flexible segmental paving. Do not use bedding sand to correct base elevation; follow the paver and project specifications.
Does the calculator include polymeric joint sand?
Yes. The recommended method uses the exact product data sheet's coverage range and joint limits. Coverage varies with paver dimensions, joint width and depth, pattern, and compaction.
Can I use this calculator for a driveway or permeable patio?
No. It is limited to standard flexible sand-set pedestrian residential patios. Vehicular, permeable, porcelain, pedestal, mortar-set, overlay, rooftop, irregular-stone, and specialized pool-deck systems require separate design methods.
