A reliable paver-patio takeoff is a stack of separate measurements. The paved surface, aggregate-base footprint, bedding course, joints, restrained edges, and excavation may not cover exactly the same area. Keeping those quantities separate prevents a convenient area estimate from becoming a hidden construction assumption.

Confirm the installation system first
This guide covers a flexible, sand-set pedestrian residential patio using modular concrete or clay pavers. Driveways, permeable pavement, porcelain or pedestal systems, mortar-set work, overlays, irregular stone, rooftops, and specialized pool decks use different sections, materials, or engineering. Do not reuse the quantities below for those systems.
Measure the net paved area and every edge
Sketch the finished perimeter, split complex shapes into measured rectangles, and mark cutouts as subtractions. Record the actual length of each edge rather than assuming the entire perimeter receives manufactured restraint. A building, sound curb, step, or other fixed boundary can require different detailing.
Choose pavers from current manufacturer coverage
Pallets and multi-size patterns are commonly published as coverage per pallet, layer, or bundle. That published coverage is usually more dependable than multiplying nominal face dimensions because it accounts for the product’s intended module and pattern. Add cutting and breakage allowance only after calculating the net field quantity, then round to a full purchasable unit.
Calculate the compacted aggregate base
Multiply the verified base footprint by the compacted design depth. The base may extend beyond the finished paver edge where the restraint detail requires support. Depth is a site-design decision affected by soil, drainage, freeze conditions, and loading—not a value a material calculator can safely select for every property.

Ask the supplier whether material is sold by loose volume, weight, bag, or delivery minimum. Use the supplier’s current bulk density or bag yield for that specific product; moisture, gradation, and local quarry material make generic conversions unreliable.
Keep bedding sand as a uniform final course
A nominal 1-inch final bedding course is common in guidance for flexible segmental paving. It is not intended to correct a poorly graded base. Calculate its finished volume from the bedding footprint and final depth, then add only an explicit purchase allowance. Follow the selected paver specification for permitted bedding material.
Use the exact joint-sand data sheet
Joint-sand coverage can change dramatically with paver size, joint width and depth, mixed-size patterns, false joints, and consolidation. The safest planning method is to enter the current optimistic, expected, and conservative coverage values for the exact product. Confirm that joint dimensions and paver type fall within the product’s stated limits before using the estimate.
Check drainage drop and excavation separately
Drainage drop equals the selected slope percentage multiplied by the horizontal run. For example, a 1.5% slope over 12 feet drops 0.18 feet, or 2.16 inches. Direction matters as much as magnitude: verify an acceptable outlet away from buildings and vulnerable areas.
Excavation depth starts with paver thickness, final bedding depth, and compacted base depth, adjusted for the intended finished surface relative to grade. Subgrade correction, organic-soil removal, and actual elevations can increase excavation. A loose haul-away volume also needs a user-supplied soil expansion factor and vehicle capacity.
