Split the project into rectangles

Measure each room, closet, alcove, and connected section separately. Divide L-shaped or irregular spaces into rectangles that do not overlap, then add their areas.

Subtract only real exclusions

Deduct islands, fixed cabinets, hearths, or other permanent areas only when the selected flooring truly will not extend below them. Small deductions often do not reduce the order because cuts and whole cartons still control.

Measure transitions: Doorways and changes in flooring direction can create extra cuts even when they add little area.

Use exact carton coverage

The coverage printed on the product carton is the purchasing basis. Do not calculate box coverage only from nominal plank dimensions; mixed lengths, factory packaging, and product tolerances may differ.

Choose waste for the layout

Simple square rooms with straight installation generally create fewer unusable offcuts than diagonal layouts, patterned tile, many doorways, or several small rooms. Treat waste as a project input, not a universal constant.

  • Room shape and number of transitions
  • Pattern direction and repeat
  • Tile or plank size
  • Defects, breakage, and color selection
  • Future spare material from the same production lot

Keep roll goods separate

Broadloom carpet and sheet vinyl depend on roll width, seam placement, direction, and pattern repeat. They need a roll-layout plan rather than ordinary square-foot carton math.
