Material estimate only. Verify product coverage, waste, layout, installation instructions, substrate, moisture conditions, transitions, and field measurements before purchasing.

One calculator, two material systems

Laminate, luxury vinyl, hardwood, engineered wood, bamboo, cork, carpet tile, and many other products are purchased in whole cartons. Tile uses the same carton-coverage purchasing method but adds tile size and grout spacing for its layout view.

Use the carton label: Nominal plank or tile dimensions do not replace the manufacturer’s published coverage per box.

How to measure a flooring project

  1. Split irregular rooms into rectangles and add each rectangle separately.
  2. Include closets and connected spaces that receive the same flooring.
  3. Subtract only permanent areas that truly will not receive flooring.
  4. Select the installation pattern and review the editable waste allowance.
  5. Enter exact product dimensions and coverage from the carton.
  6. Round purchasing quantities to whole unopened boxes and verify return policies.

Why carpet and sheet vinyl are excluded

Broadloom carpet and sheet flooring are sold in fixed roll widths. Their actual order depends on direction, cut lengths, seams, pattern repeat, and whether adjacent pieces can be matched. They need a dedicated roll-layout calculator rather than a square-footage shortcut.

Frequently asked questions

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Add the room areas, subtract permanent exclusions, apply a waste allowance, divide by the exact coverage printed on the carton, and round up to a whole box.

Does the calculator work for tile?

Yes. Tile mode accepts tile dimensions and grout-joint width, while box quantities continue to use the exact carton coverage entered from the product label.

Can I calculate several rooms together?

Yes. Add each room as a rectangle and add separate deductions for islands, cabinets, hearths, or other areas that will not receive flooring.

Does this calculate broadloom carpet or sheet vinyl?

No. Roll goods require roll-width, seam, direction, and pattern-repeat planning. Treating them as ordinary boxed square footage can materially underestimate the order.

Is the approximate piece count the number I should order?

Use the whole-box result and the manufacturer carton coverage for purchasing. Piece count is a planning reference because mixed lengths, cuts, damage, and offcut reuse vary.
