A material estimate answers how much tile to buy. A layout plan answers where every course begins and what will be visible at the perimeter. Do both before installation.

Measure the actual tile module
Use the actual tile dimension plus the intended finished grout joint. Nominal dimensions and carton descriptions may not equal the installed module. Check several pieces and include built-in spacer lugs where the product instructions require them.
Find centerlines, then compare two starts
Mark the midpoint in both directions. Test one layout with a tile centered on that line and another with the grout joint centered. The second choice effectively shifts the grid by half a tile module and can turn narrow edge cuts into balanced pieces.
Judge the important edges
Mathematical symmetry is not the only consideration. Door thresholds, long focal walls, tubs, cabinets, and transitions may deserve priority. Daltile recommends adjusting the centerline when the original layout produces cuts smaller than half a tile. Dry-lay the controlling row to see the real result.
Preserve movement space
A tile grid should not be locked tightly against restraining surfaces. Schluter notes that tile assemblies require movement joints, including perimeter joints, because temperature, moisture, and loading cause components to move differently. Determine the required locations and treatment from the complete assembly instructions and applicable standards.
Snap control lines—not every grout line
Once the dry layout is confirmed, establish square control lines that remain visible during setting. Work in manageable sections without covering the references needed to keep the grid straight. Recheck dimensions as the work approaches the opposite walls.

- Every rectangular field and transition measured
- Actual tile dimensions and joint width confirmed
- Tile-centered and joint-centered starts compared
- Edge cuts checked at the most visible boundaries
- Perimeter and field movement joints identified
- Waste adjusted for pattern, breakage, defects, and spare tile
- Carton coverage and dye-lot information checked before ordering
