What makes this different from a tile quantity calculator

Square footage can estimate how much tile to buy, but it cannot tell you where the first control line belongs. This tool draws the actual grid, compares two common centering choices in each direction, and reports the resulting edge pieces.

Dry layout still controls: Tile dimensions, spacer lugs, room squareness, focal walls, thresholds, pattern variation, and obstacles can change the best field layout.

How auto balance works

For each rectangular area, the calculator tests a tile centered on the room centerline and a grout joint centered on the same line. It compares the smaller of the two opposing edge pieces and selects the layout with the larger minimum cut. Length and width are optimized independently.

This follows the practical goal of centered fields and avoiding small perimeter pieces. Daltile’s published installation guidance advises shifting the centerline by half a tile when the original layout creates cuts smaller than half a tile.

Worked example

In a 10-foot field with 12-inch tile and no grout joint, centering a grout line produces ten full tiles. Centering a tile produces two 6-inch edge pieces and nine full tiles. Auto balance therefore selects the grout-centered option for that direction.

Frequently asked questions

Should a room be centered on a tile or a grout joint?

Either can be correct. Compare both layouts and keep the one that produces larger, more balanced perimeter pieces at the important walls and transitions.

Why does the calculator show more tile positions than tiles to order?

A position is one placed piece in the grid, including perimeter cuts. Ordering uses total area plus waste because one full tile can sometimes supply more than one cut, while breakage and unusable offcuts add uncertainty.

Can I enter more than one room?

Yes. Add up to eight rectangular areas. Each area receives its own centered layout while material quantities are combined.

Does the perimeter gap become a grout joint?

Not automatically. Perimeter and movement spaces require an appropriate flexible treatment or profile based on the assembly specifications. Do not fill required movement space with rigid grout.

Does this plan diagonal, herringbone, or offset tile?

No. This version models a straight grid. Pattern repeats, offsets, obstacles, transitions, and out-of-square walls require a dedicated pattern layout or field mockup.
