A clean wainscoting layout comes from deciding which dimensions stay constant and which dimension absorbs the remainder. The calculator keeps stile and rail sizes fixed, then equalizes the panel openings.

Survey the complete wall
Measure finished wall length and height, then locate doors, windows, inside and outside corners, outlets, switches, registers, baseboard changes, and floor slope. A mathematically equal field may need adjustment to resolve a prominent obstacle.
Use one datum: Choose a reliable floor or level reference instead of copying an uneven floor at every panel.
Set the top of the composition
Choose the top or chair-rail height in relation to window stools, furniture, switches, and adjacent rooms. Confirm whether the entered height refers to the top of the rail, the panel field, or another visible line.
Choose panel count and end behavior
Test several whole panel counts. Full-width end stiles create a complete frame at each boundary, half-width ends visually share a stile around a continuing corner, and no end stiles may suit applied picture-frame molding.
Resolve corners and openings deliberately
Do not let the formula silently wrap through a corner or behind casing. Treat separate wall faces independently, then decide whether their end margins should match, align, or turn the corner as a continuous detail.

Make a full-size test panel
Tape or lightly mark at least one complete panel before cutting. Verify the proportions from normal viewing distance and test the real molding profile, miter size, rail intersections, and finish buildup.
Material count: Linear footage does not optimize stock lengths or guarantee reusable offcuts; plan joints and add project-specific waste.
