Formula and assumptions

opening width = (wall length − end stiles − intermediate stiles) ÷ panel count
opening height = chair rail height − top rail − bottom rail
order trim = net trim × (1 + waste percentage)
  • The wall is treated as straight, level, plumb, and unobstructed. Lay out around doors, windows, outlets, corners, and uneven floors in the field.
  • Stiles are continuous vertical members. In face-frame modes, top and bottom rail pieces fit between adjacent stiles and equal the calculated panel-opening width.
  • Face-frame material includes the displayed stiles and top/bottom rail pieces. Chair rail is listed separately.
  • Panel openings are layout dimensions, not finished cut sizes for sheet goods or custom panels.
  • Waste is a planning allowance applied to total linear trim. Stock-length optimization, miter loss, scarf joints, and reusable offcuts are not modeled.

Four panel treatments, one transparent layout

Picture-frame molding uses the stile and rail values as equal spacing bands around applied rectangles. Shaker and raised-panel modes use continuous vertical stiles with horizontal rails fitted between them. Applied-molding mode combines the face frame with an inset molding rectangle.

Start with the actual wall: Measure at the intended chair-rail height and check both ends. Out-of-square corners, bowed walls, baseboards, windows, doors, and outlets can change the field layout.

Choosing chair rail height

Published installation guidance commonly places wainscoting or chair rail around one-third of the wall height, often within roughly 32 to 42 inches. Treat that as a design starting point rather than a rule. Aligning cleanly with windowsills, counters, furniture, and existing trim is often more important.

How equal panels are calculated

  1. Subtract the selected end-stile widths and all intermediate stile widths from the wall.
  2. Divide the remaining length by the panel count.
  3. Subtract the top and bottom rail heights from the chair-rail height for the opening height.
  4. Place each stile from the left wall edge using the unrounded calculated positions.
  5. Add mode-specific stiles, rails, panel molding, chair rail, and the selected waste allowance.

Frequently asked questions

How wide should each wainscoting panel be?

There is no single required width. Choose a panel count that fits the wall and room proportions, then use the calculated equal opening width after accounting for end and intermediate stiles.

How high should a chair rail be?

Common guidance places chair rail roughly 32 to 42 inches above the floor or near one-third of wall height, but windows, furniture, molding profiles, and room proportions may justify another height.

What do half-width end stiles do?

They use half of the selected stile width at each wall end. Together the two ends occupy one full stile width, which can make a repeating layout appear to continue around adjacent corners.

Does this calculate raised-panel cut sizes?

It calculates the equal openings and face-frame layout. Custom raised-panel blanks, profiles, expansion allowances, and joinery require the actual product or fabrication method.

What is included in total molding?

The selected mode determines the estimate. Shaker and raised-panel modes include face-frame stiles, rails, and chair rail. Picture-frame mode includes applied frame molding and chair rail. Applied-molding mode includes both systems.
